Vol. 335 No. 7

Written Answers. - Traffic Control.

847.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the number of fatalities on Sandyford Road, County Dublin, he will now order the speed limit to be reduced from 40 to 30 m.p.h.

848.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the fact that there are four schools on Sandyford Road, County Dublin he will now order that a pedestrian crossing be provided without future regard for counts or studies.

849.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the extreme danger caused by traffic on Sandyford Road, County Dublin, he will now order the provision of a new footpath from Dun Emer Estate to Clonard Lodge.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 847, 848 and 849 together.

Dublin County Council are reviewing speed limits in their areas generally and I understand that among the proposals which they intend to submit for my consideration is a review of the current limit on the Sandyford Road.

The provision of traffic signs, including pedestrian crossings, is a matter for the road authority acting with the consent, or at the request, of the Garda Commissioner. The commissioner has requested Dublin County Council to provide a "pelican" light controlled crossing near the Parkvale junction and the council intend to do this within the current year.

I understand that public footpaths have been provided on both sides of Sandyford road between Dun Emer Estate and Clonard Lodge and that Dublin County Council intend to carry out further improvements to them in the current year. The timing and execution of those works are for the county council.
