asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he intends to promote acting night supervisors (Grade 2) to fill vacant posts of night telephone supervisors (Grade 2) at the Central Telephone Exchange, Dublin 2; and the reason acting night telephone supervisors (Grade 2) are debarred from leave reserve duties on the night telephone supervisors' (Grade 2) duty rota at that exchange and as a result denied access to the work experience and training involved.

A review is being carried out at present to determine the number of permanent night supervisor posts required in the Central Telephone Exchange in Dublin having regard to the reduction in night operator traffic which has occurred and which is continuing. Pending completion of the review, which is expected to take a few months, a number of posts which have become vacant are being filled on a substitution basis as they may not be required on a permanent basis.
Acting night telephone supervisors Grade 2 perform leave reserve duties on the night telephone supervisors duty rota on the full range of duties apart from a small number on which substantive supervisors are necessary. The present arrangement affords comprehensive work experience for acting night telephone supervisors, Grade 2.
