Official estimates of the labour force by broad sector are compiled in respect of mid-April of each year. It is estimated that some 232,000 persons were at work in manufacuting industries at mid-April 1982.
More recent trends in employment in manufacturing industries are available from the quarterly inquiry into industrial employment, earnings and hours worked. This inquiry compiles estimates only in respect of firms with three or more persons engaged and is therefore not comprehensive in coverage. On the basis of this inquiry the most recent estimates of employment in manufacturing industries are as follows: March 1982, 202,400; June 1982, 199,900; September 1982, 198,700.
