418.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the steps he proposes to take to make an artificial insemination service available to small farmers on Arranmore Island, County Donegal, because cattle numbers have been reduced as a result of a service not being available there.

The provision of an artificial insemination service in County Donegal is the function of North Western Cattle Breeding Society Ltd., the body licensed for the area under the Live Stock (Artificial Insemination) Act, 1947. Because of the high cost of providing artificial insemination to herdowners on the island, natural service would appear more economical.
