asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of gardaí, both male and female (a) the number employed at 31 January 1984; (b) in each city at 31 January 1984; (c) in all the Garda divisions at 31 January 1984; (d) on clerical duties in Garda Headquarters, in all cities and in all the Garda Divisions; and (e) on any other duties apart from on-the-beat or patrol duties in the country at 31 January 1984.

Limerick East): The particulars sought under headings (a) to (d) of the question are given in the following table. As regards heading (e), the position is that the allocation of manpower between patrols and other duties in any particular area varies from time to time and is a matter for decision by the local Garda officers having regard to available resources, local circumstances, other demands on Garda services and the time of day or night.
