Vol. 348 No. 5

Written Answers. - Kerry Unemployment.

393.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism, in view of the fact that Kerry County Council called a special meeting to deal with the serious unemployment problem in County Kerry, if he will request the IDA to arrange for a special task force to be sent to Kerry to deal with the unemployment problem, where 21 per cent are unemployed.

I am satisfied that every effort is already being made by the IDA to promote industrial development in County Kerry. Tralee is being promoted as a priority town by the IDA and an assistant regional manager was appointed last September to the Authority's new office in the town.

At present the IDA own 130 acres of land at nine locations and a strategic site of 604 acres in Ballylongford. They also have 147,000 sq. ft. of advance factory space in five locations in County Kerry as well as 5 × 750 sq. ft. small industry incubator units under construction in Tralee. All these facilities are being promoted for suitable industrial development.
