Vol. 348 No. 8

Written Answers. - Seized Goods.

405.

asked the Minister for Finance if an investigation will be carried out on the disappearance of seized goods which were being held in Dublin Castle by Customs & Excise officers; the security regulations for the protection of items that are siezed; and if he will outline the position on the matter relating to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7.

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the goods referred to by the Deputy were seized by customs as the person in question failed to declare them at importation. He was given the option of securing release of the goods on payment of a compromise sum in lieu of legal proceedings but did not take up that option.

The goods were later stolen in the course of a break-in at the State warehouse where such goods are normally stored. The break-in was reported to the Garda. It is not the practice to disclose security arrangements for seized goods but every effort is made to ensure their safe storage.
