Vol. 353 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Donegal Schools.

561.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the proposed extension to a school (details supplied) in County Donegal.

My Department have agreed to the extension and reconstruction of the school referred to with a view to providing six suitable classrooms, a general purposes room and ancillary accommodation. The Commissioners of Public Works have been requested to prepare sketch plans for the project. My Department will be in touch with the school authorities as soon as the plans become available.

562.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position on the appointment of a remedial teacher to schools (details supplied) in County Donegal.

The application of the schools in question for a remedial teaching post is currently being considered in the context of the priority of need in the schools generally and the availability of remedial posts for the 1984-85 school year.

563.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Education when additional accommodation will be provided at Fintra national school, Killybegs, County Donegal, in respect of which sketch plans were submitted to her Department by the Office of Public Works some 12 months ago.

The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to prepare revised sketch plans for the additional accommodation proposed for Fintra national school, County Donegal. When the revised plans come to hand my Department will be in touch with the school authorities.

564.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Education whether it is her Department's intention to amalgamate second-level schools in Ballyshannon, County Donegal; and on what grounds this is being done.

565.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Education when the necessary repairs will be carried out to De La Salle College, Ballyshannon, County Donegal.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 564 and 565 together.

A major post primary school building programme including the provision of a new school to replace the De La Salle College is proposed for Ballyshannon. In accordance with the terms of the Programme for Action in Education 1984-87 (paragraph 5.12), it is necessary to examine the practicability of the integration or, alternatively, the co-ordination of post-primary school facilities in the Ballyshannon catchment area. Pending completion of this examination, it is not possible to indicate what proposals if any my Department will make to the local school authorities in relation to the future development of post-primary education facilities in Ballyshannon. Neither is it possible at this stage to say when the new De La Salle College will be provided. It is hoped that it will be possible to make decisions in these matters at an early date.
