Vol. 354 No. 7

Written Answers. - Disabled Person's Maintenance Allowance.

714.

asked the Minister for Health the reason a disabled person's maintenance allowance has been refused on medical grounds by the South-Eastern Health Board to a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary in view of the fact that he is certainly unfit for work as he is aged 65 years and suffers from chronic obstructive air-way disease and is on numerous medications for this and he is also unable to walk any distance because of breathlessness; and if this case could be reviewed in the light of these facts.

Disabled person's maintenance allowance is payable subject to a means test to certain persons who, due to a disability, are unable to undertake work suited to their age, experience and qualifications. I understand that a medical examination in this case indicated that the person in question is not disabled to this extent. An appeal against the decision was received by the South-Eastern Health Board on 30 November 1984. A final decision will be taken in the near future.
