Vol. 357 No. 4

Written Answers. - Facilities for Mentally Handicapped.

525.

asked the Minister for Health the buildings for the mentally handicapped in each health board area which are not in use because of insufficient funding to provide staff.

I have had the position relating to unopened units under review and have discussed the matter in great detail with the Brothers of St. John of God and the Brothers of Charity. As a result of these discussions I have made additional funds available to these Orders which will enable some progress to be made. As of now, however, the following is a list of purpose built facilities which have been provided for mentally handicapped people and which are not operational. I will, however, keep these units under review.

Eastern Health Board—Cheeverstown House (Phase II) (The commissioning of Phase I was approved in 1984); Dunmore House, Glenageary, Craft Training Facility; Horticultural Training Facility; PreSchool Unit.

North-Eastern Health Board—Hostel, Cootehill, Co. Cavan, St. Mary's Drumcar, 2×10 place chalets; 20 place unit; Training Centre.

Southern Health Board—St. Patrick's Upton, 2×10 place chalets.

Western Health Board—Pope John Paul II Centre, 5×10 place chalets.
