asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the recent publication entitled Higher Education in Ireland: Co-Operation and Complementarity; if she will make a statement on the general recommendations in this report which aim at a far greater practical co-operation at third level between academic institutions in the Republic and Northern Ireland; and whether her Department are prepared to take any initiatives in encouraging the implementation of these recommendations.

The report in question was among the topics discussed at a meeting which I had with Mr. Nicholas Scott, MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Education in Northern Ireland, on 26 March 1985. At that meeting Mr. Scott and I indicated our commitment to giving serious and sympathetic consideration to the recommendations in the report where implementation is deemed feasible and of mutual benefit to our educational systems.
