Vol. 357 No. 8

Written Answers. - Mayo Industrial Development.

540.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the plans he has for the development of an industrial site at Ballycastle, County Mayo.

I am informed that the Industrial Development Authority do not have any plans, at present, for the development of an industrial site at Ballycastle, County Mayo. There are, however, sites available for industrial development at Killala, Crossmolina, Ballina and Bangor Erris, totalling over 34 acres. These sites are being actively promoted by the Authority for suitable industrial projects.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware of the very high rate of unemployment in the Ballina area, County Mayo; and, if so, the steps he intends to take to alleviate this situation.

I am aware of the unemployment rate in the Ballina area.

In so far as industrial development measures to alleviate the unemployment situation are concerned, I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that it is actively promoting its 27,800 sq. ft. advance factory in Ballina and the 28,000 sq. ft. factory which has been provided by a private developer in the town.

In addition, the IDA is promoting a small industry unit of 3,600 sq. ft. and two incubator units of 750 sq. ft. each, for suitable projects. The IDA also has two sites totalling 15 acres available in Ballina for industrial projects.
