Vol. 357 No. 12

Written Answers. - Waste Recycling.

566.

asked the Minister for the Environment in the light of An Foras Forbartha's findings that approximately 46 tonnes of litter and dumped materials are removed daily from the streets of Dublin, if he will take appropriate measures to encourage the development of enterprises to recycle and process litter and other rubbish in our cities and towns.

My Department's involvement in waste recycling arises mainly in the context of the waste collection and disposal services operated by local authorities. The powers of local authorities under the Litter Act, 1982 extend to the taking of measures to facilitate and encourage the recycling of waste and my Department has urged them on a number of occasions to provide facilities for the recovery of useful materials. Considerable quantities of waste oil and scrap metal are recovered in this way.
