Vol. 361 No. 3

Written Answers. - Clondalkin Paper Mills.

41.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the up-to-date position concerning the re-opening of Clondalkin Paper Mills, Dublin 22.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the expected number of people to be employed when the Clondalkin Paper Mills, Dublin 22, re-opens.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 41 and 42 together.

The major efforts which the Government have made to secure the resumption of paper making at Clondalkin are now nearing fruition. The company which purchased the mills is at present carrying out a major refurbishment programme. This is progressing satisfactorily and I understand from the company that it will be substantially completed by early 1986.

The date of the commencement of paper manufacturing and the number to be employed at that stage are, of course, matters for the company. I am, however, informed that paper will be produced by early next year and that employment will have risen to over 200 workers within the next 12 months.
