Vol. 361 No. 8

Written Answers. - Leixlip (Kildare) Meat Processing Plant.

217.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the uncertainty of the future of the IMP meat processing plant at Leixlip, County Kildare; if he feels it necessary that the plant at Leixlip should continue in operation; if his Department will contact the directors in an effort to ascertain the future of the plant notwithstanding the fact that the factory in question is privately owned: and if he can suggest any changes with regard to operation, including processing and marketing which might have the effect of ensuring the future employment of the workforce at Leixlip.

The question of reopening the IMP plant at Leixlip is primarily a matter for the proprietors. State aid would, of course, be available through the IDA for a wide range of improvements at the plant.

My functions relate to the creation of the condition in which cattle production can expand and the meat factories can prosper and develop. Every effort has been and will continue to be made to ensure that these conditions are as favourable as possible both for cattle producers and for the beef export industry.
