Vol. 361 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ombudsman's Report.

222.

asked the Minister for Justice the action which has been taken by him to implement the many important recommendations for legislative change in the Ombudsman's report 1984.

Limerick East): The only matter within my area of responsibility is the suggestion of the Ombudsman that the rule of law under which a married woman takes the domicile of her husband should be reviewed. That suggestion was made in the context of deserted wife's allowance and widow's pension in the case where a husband has obtained a recognised foreign divorce and his wife is resident here. The suggestion does not indicate how a change in the law of domicile would be likely to improve the situation of women in these circumstances. However, proposals for legislation to abolish the domicile of dependency of married women are at an advanced stage and I hope to introduce that legislation very shortly.
