Written Answers. - County Kildare Schools.

asked the Minister for Education the plans she has for the improvement and extension of facilities at Ardclough national school in County Kildare; and when it is proposed to have the necessary work put in hand and the further planning and processing which is required before work can begin on the project.

My Department has agreed to grant-aid the provision of permanent accommodation comprising three classrooms, a general purposes area and ancillary accommodation at Ardclough national school, County Kildare. A sketch scheme submitted to my Department by the school authorities is being examined, and the outcome will be conveyed to them as soon as possible. The project must go through the following further stages of planning before the question of inviting tenders can arise: approval of sketch scheme, including projected costings, agreement on the local contribution and preparation of contract documents. It is not possible at this stage to say when building work may commence.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the hardship caused to parents, teachers and children attending the number two national school, Monasterevin, County Kildare, due to the very poor conditions of the school; if she will take the necessary steps to have required improvements carried out before Christmas; if she has any plans to replace the existing facilities; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has under consideration various proposals for the replacement of the classroom at present in use at No. 2 national school, Monasterevin, County Kildare. Capital expenditure on improvements to the existing structure has not been recommended by my Department's professional advisers. A decision in the matter will be conveyed in the near future to the school authorities.
