Vol. 361 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Sligo Waste Disposal.

76.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline in detail the proposals of Sligo Corporation for the dumping of refuse from Sligo town and Sligo county.

The information sought by the Deputy is not available in my Department. Under the European Communities (Waste) Regulations, 1979, Sligo County Council is responsible for all management aspects of waste disposal operations in County Sligo, including Sligo Borough. It is obliged to prepare an overall waste plan which would identify the quantities and types of waste arising and provide for suitable disposal sites and for any special arrangements needed for particular wastes. To date, such a plan has not been adopted by the council.

My Department's function in this area is limited to providing advice to local authorities in the discharge of their functions, the approval of borrowing for tipsite purchase and the provision of grants for co-disposal sites. An application for a grant for the provision of a co-disposal site at Finisklin, Sligo, is being considered in the Department at present.
