asked the Minister for Communications the year in which bus lanes were first introduced in Dublin; and the number of kilometres of bus lanes in use at the end of each year since their introduction to the end of 1985.
Written Answers. - Dublin Bus Lanes.
In 1980, a contra-flow bus lane of .13 kilometres was provided in Parliament Street under the aegis of a special CIE-Dublin Corporation technical traffic unit. That bus lane was shortened by .04 kilometres in 1982.
Following the publication in 1980 of the Report of the Transport Consultative Commission on Passenger Transport Services in the Dublin Area (PRL. 8715) the non-statutory Dublin Transportation Task Force was established under the auspices of my Department and the task force has to date sponsored bus lanes at more than 60 locations. The length of buslanes at the end of each year in the period 1980-85 is as follows:

No new bus lanes were introduced in 1984 but a reduction of .22 kilometres (which explains the drop for that year) was made in the Clontarf Road bus lane in 1984 in consequence of the opening of the Embankment Road. A one-week bus lane experiment took place in 1971.
