Vol. 370 No. 13

Written Answers. - Clare Harbour and Landing Facilities.

149.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he has any proposals for the improvements of harbour and landing facilities in County Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will recall, a meeting took place with a deputation from Clare County Council earlier this year to discuss proposals for the development of the fishing industry in Clare at which it was agreed that the case of Doonbeg be given particular attention for harbour development. To this end my Department's engineers met on site with the Clare County engineer to discuss the options for the improvement of facilities at Doonbeg. A proposal has been drawn up and is being examined in my Department in the light of fish stocks available and the type and scale of fleet required to exploit these stocks.

With regard to Carrigaholt, I have approved a grant for the stabilization of the pierhead and for general improvements and work will commence as soon as weather permits.

My Department have also received a proposal from Clare County Council for harbour improvement works at Liscannor and I have arranged for a Department's engineer to meet the Clare County engineer on site, to discuss the proposal and any other proposals the County Council might have for harbour development in Clare.
