Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Primary School Places.

615.

asked the Minister for Education if there are approximately 30,000 empty primary school places in the Dublin area due to declining numbers in certain parishes; the proposals, if any, she has to proceed with the review initiated by the previous Government in regard to using these places in substitution for new building elsewhere; and, if so, if this review will be completed.

An analysis carried out in 1983 by my Department of data supplied by the Department's inspectors concerning primary schools in Dublin city indicated a surplus of approximately 30,000 school places.

A committee representative of my Department and of the Department of Finance has been set up to conduct a through review of policy in relation to planning and provision of new and replacement accommodation at primary and post-primary level.
