asked the Minister for Health the numbers employed in administration and the total cost of administration in the health services, including details for each health board and central administration in the Department of Health.

In addition to health boards, the total number employed in administration in the health service including the Department of Health, public voluntary hospitals, homes for the mentally handicapped and other health agencies is almost 6,500. This represents about 10 per cent of all health service staff.
This figure includes community welfare officers, house parents, dental attendants and certain other "front line" staff. Many other staff are involved in direct service to the public such as telephonists, medical record staff and those dealing with medical card applications, drug refunds and payment of allowances such as disabled persons maintenance allowance. A separate figure for the cost of administration is not available. It is estimated that the total salary cost would be in the region of £60 million.
