Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mayo Train Route.

79.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the plans, if any, there are by Iarnród Éireann to change the route of the train to the Asahi plant in Killala, County Mayo which carries acrilonitrile and other dangerous chemicals; if his approval for the rerouting is required or has been sought; if any re-routing proposed involves the train in passing passenger trains on the parallel line or passing through densely populated areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The routing of trains is a matter for Iarnród Éireann, the subsidiary of CIE given responsibility for the operation of the railways under the Transport Act, 1986. My approval is not required in relation to the introduction of or changes to services. All the CIE services are required to be operated with due regard to safety of operation in accordance with the general duties imposed on Córas Iompair Éireann in section 7 of the Transport Act, 1958.
