It is not the practice to publish forecasts of the national debt. On 30 September last, the latest date for which figures are available, the national debt was £26,039 million.
In 1987 £411 million of foreign loans and £1,132 million of domestic national loans are scheduled for repayment. In addition, £851 million of foreign loans have been prepaid this year to date as part of my Department's policy of active debt management, whereby the maximum benefit to the Exchequer is derived from any favourable developments on the capital markets. This year's budget estimate for national debt interest charged on Central Fund Services is £1,965 million.
