Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Arterial Drainage.

72.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate with regard to arterial drainage (a) the amount allocated to the different regions for maintenance for 1988 (b) the percentage cutbacks this represents per region (c) the proposed cutbacks per region in terms of numbers employed in maintenance and (d) the proportionate decrease in the number employed per region this represents; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

74.

asked the Minister for Finance the amounts of money allocated for drainage maintenance in the north-west region under the Office of Public Works in the years 1987 and 1988.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 72 and 74 together.

An amount of £3.5 million, the same as in 1987, is being provided in the Vote for Public Works and Buildings for arterial drainage maintenance in 1988. The division of these resources among the regions has not yet been finalised but there will be a reduction in the total employment content of this service in 1988, to be met by means of voluntary redundancy and short time working if necessary.

Some £300,000 was provided in 1987 for drainage maintenance in the northwest region.
