Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Howth Harbour Facilities.

73.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that proper regulations and berthing instructions be implemented in Howth Harbour, County Dublin; if he will further ensure that three large berths be provided for beamers, two berths set aside for discharge of ice and also two landing berths; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Proper regulations and berthing instructions are being implemented in Howth Harbour but implementation is sometimes made difficult due to a lack of cooperation by some fishermen.

Beamers, by virtue of their length and draught must be accommodated in the deeper section of the harbour. While berthage in this section is limited, it is provided for them consistent with the overall availability of berthing space for all trawlers using the harbour.

As there is only one ice chute provided by BIM, one berth is considered adequate for discharge of ice, at present.

There are a total of 24 landing berths available in the harbour and efforts are made to keep two of them free for landing purposes only. In this connection also the co-operation of the fishermen is essential.
