Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Roadside and Market Sales.

81.

asked the Minister for Justice if his Department monitor the origin and source of goods offered for sale at roadside and other markets around the country; and, if not, if he has any plans to make it an offence to purchase stolen goods sold at such markets.

The purchase of stolen goods is already an offence under the Larceny Act, 1916. The Garda authorities inform me that all suspected breaches of the law in this regard are, of course, fully investigated by the Garda and that, where necessary, appropriate follow-up action is taken.

I should add that the adequacy of the law in relation to receiving stolen property is one of the matters being examined by the Law Reform Commission at the request of the Government.
