242.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number and cost of houses sanctioned by his Department from November 1982 to February 1987 for Drogheda Corporation, Louth County Council and Dundalk Urban District Council, County Louth; the number and cost of houses sanctioned from February 1987 to 1 January 1988; if he has any plans to give sanction to any housing schemes in County Louth in 1988; the number of houses which are involved; and if his attention has been drawn to the substantial increases in each area of housing applications.

The requested information is set out in the following table:

The foregoing figures relate to tenders for schemes of more than five houses. These tender prices do not include land acquisition costs or miscellaneous costs and may not include the cost of site development which is sometimes carried out under a separate contract.

The acceptance of tenders for schemes of five houses and less does not require my specific sanction where the housing authority has an approved unit cost and the cost of the particular scheme can be met from the authority's capital allocation.

With regard to 1988 the position is that each housing authority has been asked to submit its claim for a capital allocation for its housing construction programme. Pending receipt and examination of these claims it is not possible to indicate what funds will be made available to the individual authorities to finance their housing programmes and consequently what schemes may be approved.

I am aware of the housing need in each housing area.
