Vol. 378 No. 6

Written Answers. - Shannon Town Centre Road Scheme.

194.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has granted approval for the new road plan for Shannon, County Clare; if sanction has not already been given, when it is proposed to do so; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume the question refers to Clare County Council's traffic management scheme for Shannon Town Centre involving improvements to the two N19 junctions at the town centre, including the replacement of the existing traffic signals.

On 23 June 1987, my Department approved the local authority's technical proposals for this scheme. Because of the limited funds available and the competing demands for other important road schemes, it was not possible to provide specific road grant funding towards the cost of this particular proposal in 1988. However, it is open to the local authority to finance the cost from the block grant allocation of £711,000 for 1988.
