Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Environmental Protection.

215.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the Government policy with regard to the ongoing destruction of the Brazilian rain forest and the implications of such for endangered species and the environment generally; the way in which the Government's opposition to such enormous destruction has been conveyed; and if he will outline the steps he is taking to ensure that Ireland's view in this matter is being expressed effectively.

Environmental protection issues of global concern, such as the destruction of the tropical rain forest, are dealt with in the work programmes of various international organisations in which this country participates. In general, international co-operative effort is more effective in relation to such issues than unilateral national action.
