asked the Taoiseach the estimated numbers of people who have emigrated to (a) England (b) the United States and (c) other European countries in the years 1985-1986 and 1987-1988.
Written Answers. - Emigration Statistics.
Comprehensive documentary or other administrative procedure relating to movement of person into and out of the State would be necessary in order to determine the actual numbers of inward and outward migrants. As such procedures are not in force the information requested by the Deputy is not available.
The only reliable estimates of migration flows are those for net migration (i.e. the difference between the inward and outward flows) between successive Censuses of Population.
Population estimates (which are subject to revision when the results of the next Census become available) are made in respect of mid-April of each year from which estimates of net migration can be derived for the 12 months to mid-April. The net migration estimates for the four most recent 12 month periods are as follows:
Year to Mid-April |
Estimated Net Outward Migration |
1985 |
20,000 |
1986 |
28,000 |
1987 |
27,000 |
1988 |
32,000 |
