Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Multidenominational Primary Schools.

326.

asked the Minister for Education, in relation to multidenominational primary schools, if, in contrast to those under denominational patronage, her Department have recently declined to assist financially the provision of temporary classroom accommodation; and if she will make a statement on the matter, in particular having regard to the provisions of Article 44 2.4 of the Constitution.

Primary schools — multidenominational or denominational — are entitled to normal grants under the Rules for National Schools.

New schools awaiting permanent recognition are granted provisional recognition in order that the Department may assess, over a period of time, the feasibility of such schools. Primary schools granted provisional recognition are grant-aided where necessary for the rental of temporary classroom accommodation. In some cases the schools authorities with provisional recognition elect to provide permanent classroom accommodation while awaiting permanent recognition.

Capital grants are available to schools that have achieved permanent recognition.
