asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the current levels of payment for both cattle and sheep under the headage schemes in (1) the severely handicapped areas and (2) the less severely handicapped areas; and the maximum payments to farmers with (a) sheep only and (b) cattle only.

The level of payments for cattle under the cattle headage scheme in more severely handicapped areas is: first eight livestock units, £70 each if beef cows, £32 each if other livestock units; next 22 livestock units, £66 each if beef cows, £28 each if other livestock units. The maximum payment is £2,012 on 30 livestock units.

The level of payments on beef cows under the beef cow scheme in less severly handicapped areas is: first eight cows, £70 each, next 20 cows, £66 each. The maximum payment is £1,880 on 28 beef cows.

The level of payments to farmers in the severely handicapped and less severely handicapped areas under the sheep headage scheme is: first 150 eligible ewes or hogget ewes, £9.50 each, next 50 eligible ewes or hogget ewes, £6.50 each. The maximum payment is £1,750 on 200 ewes.
