Vol. 393 No. 8

Written Answers. - National School Repairs.

193.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the view of the boards of management of a school (details supplied) that the replacement of a flat roof at the school with the help of a grant from her Department would be a waste of money and that the erection of an A type roof would be far more satisfactory; if officials of her Department or the Office of Public Works on behalf of her Department have evaluated the situation; if they have considered and costed the erection of an A type roof and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department consider that their architect's proposals for the replacement of the existing flat roof at the national school referred to by the Deputy will be effective in every respect. There are many examples throughout the country of similar roof works to national schools being carried out successfully. Before my Department sanctioned the grant for the roof works proposed, they considered fully a report and costings from their architect on the question of the provision of a pitched roof. My Department are of the view that the grant-aiding of a pitched roof would not be warranted because of the cost which would be involved and the overall circumstances of the case.
