Vol. 393 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Cork Pier.

28.

asked the Minister for the Marine whether he will make moneys available for the upgrading of Keelbeg pier, Union Hall, County Cork, in light of its present deplorable and dangerous condition and in view of the very major increase in fish landings there.

My Department's engineer is at present examining a development proposal for Keelbeg pier which was commissioned by the Union Hall Fishermen's Co-operative. A series of hydrographic surveys of the area have been undertaken by my Department. When the detailed engineering assessment as to what is required is available, I will consider what can be done. Any proposals would, of course, have to be considered in the context of my Department's existing programme of works and the many calls upon the resources available for fishery harbour development.

I should say, however, that in 1988 my Department made a grant payment to Cork County Council of £97,500, which was 75 per cent of the total cost of improvement works undertaken by the county council at Keelbeg pier. These works involved reclamation of foreshore and surfacing to accommodate increased vehicular traffic and make adequate provision for fish landing.
