Vol. 394 No. 2

Written Answers. - Referral of Patient's Abroad.

106.

asked the Minister for Health the total amount of money spent on patients' treatment abroad, indicating the amounts spent on the following conditions: (a) bone marrow transplants, (b) liver transplants and (c) other major conditions.

A total of £668.170 was spent on the referral of patients abroad in 1988, which is the latest year for which figures are available. This amount included a total of £249,500 for bone marrow transplants and £36,000 for liver transplants.

I should add that the costs quoted in many of the cases referred abroad are estimated as the final bills have not yet been received.
