A total of £668.170 was spent on the referral of patients abroad in 1988, which is the latest year for which figures are available. This amount included a total of £249,500 for bone marrow transplants and £36,000 for liver transplants.
I should add that the costs quoted in many of the cases referred abroad are estimated as the final bills have not yet been received.
