asked the Minister for Health the number of complaints received by (a) his Department and (b) each health board in respect of general practitioners in the general medical service for the latest available year.

Complaints received in relation to general practitioners participating in the general medical services scheme are dealt with in accordance with the specific provisions contained in the GMS contract.

Complaints against general practitioners which are received by my Department are forwarded to the chief executive officer of the appropriate health board for his attention as these matters are the sole responsibility of the chief executive officers.

I have been informed by health boards that the following are the number of complaints against general practitioners received in the last year: Eastern Health Board, 29; Midland Health Board, 2; Mid-Western Health Board, 0; North-Eastern Health Board, 4; North-Western Health Board, 4; Southern Health Board, 4; South-Eastern Health Board, 1; Western Health Board, 5.
