In December 1988 I established a committee under the chairmanship of a deputy chief medical officer in my Department with the following terms of reference:
To recommend how a medical genetics service should be organised to provide an adequate clinical service.
To identify the laboratory support required.
To recommend appropriate links between the clinical service and teaching institutions.
I anticipate receiving the report of the committee early in 1990 and it would be premature to make any decision on the establishment of a service until the committee report.
