Vol. 395 No. 2

Written Answers. - Concept of Commercialisation.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

35 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the further steps he proposes to take to extend the concept of commercialisation within the activities for which his Department are responsible; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

All of my Department's activities are subject to regular scrutiny to ensure that they operate efficiently and effectively.

The commercial State bodies for which I have direct responsibility have a clear mandate to operate efficiently, commercially and profitably. These bodies have to submit corporate plans to my Department covering a five year period, annual reports and accounts and interim unaudited accounts on a regular basis. These documents, together with ongoing dialogue between the State bodies and Department, allow me to keep the commercial State bodies under active review.
The activities of the non-commercial bodies are also kept under review by my Department and they are encouraged to be as commercial as possible within the limits of their mandates.
Finally, I should point out that the Programme for Government made quite clear its commitment to the maintenance of a viable and profitable commercial State sector.
