Vol. 395 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cork Gaelscoileanna Provisions.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

184 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education the provision which is being made for post-primary education for children attending Gaelscoileanna in the Cork area.

There is at present provision for post-primary education through Irish in the following schools in the Cork area: Colaiste an Phiarsaigh, Glanmire (Co-education); Scoil Mhuire, An Mhainistir Thuaidh (Boys); Coláiste Gobnatan, Baile Mhúirene (Co-education) and Scoil Mhuire, Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh (Co-education)

An application by County Cork VEC for the development of an all-Irish school in Ballincollig is currently under consideration in my Department.

My Department are committed to the continued strengthening and development of the Irish language in the education system. In line with this policy each application for the development of an all-Irish post-primary school is considered in detail and assessed on its own merits. The level of support for such a development, its long-term viability and the availability of pupil places in existing all-Irish schools within a reasonable distance are taken into account in the course of examination.
