Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - UDR Convictions.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

63 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the serious concern and doubt about the validity of the conviction of four members of the UDR from the Armagh area for the murder of a man in 1983; if he intends to raise this case though the Anglo-Irish Conference; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the doubts which have been raised about the safety of the convictions in this case and of the campaign which has been mounted by the families of the four for their release. I have had inquiries made about the case through the framework of the Anglo-Irish Conference and I have noted the Secretary of State's remarks in the House of Commons on 2 November that he will be happy to look at new evidence or new factors that might be put to him on this case.
