Vol. 395 No. 4

Written Answers. - Proposed Tallaght RTC.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

132 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education, in regard to the proposed new Regional Technical College in Tallaght, Dublin 24: (a) the square footage of the new building (b) the percentage of the student population who will be apprentices (c) the percentage of the student population who will be on vocational preparation courses and (d) when the first students will enter the college; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The projected area for the proposed new college is 12,345 square metres.

In relation to the course in the college the position is that a range of full time courses in engineering, science and business studies including languages will be provided for approximately 700 students when the college becomes fully operational. Part-time and vocational apprentice type courses will be provided for approximately a further 500 students. These are tentative estimates only. The precise nature and level of individual courses and associated enrolments will be determined following further consultations with interested parties and will as far as possible cater for the needs of the local area taking account of existing training and education resources and the requirements of local industry. Arrangements are proceeding on the basis that the college will be operational at the beginning of 1992.
