Vol. 396 No. 9

Written Answers. - Vehicle Examination Facilities.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

133 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if the laws in relation to the control and licensing of public service vehicles is unsatisfactory, having regard to the fact that it is contained in 19 different statutory instruments; if the facilities for examining taxis, private cars and buses and investigating accidents are adequate, consisting as they do of only one garage pit at Kevin Street Garda Station, Dublin 8 and in view of the fact that there are no facilities to examine privately operated buses.

The legislation in this area is the responsibility of the Minister for the Environment.

The Garda authorities advise me that the facilities for examining taxis, private cars and minibuses are considered to be satisfactory. The possibility of improving arrangements for the inspection of buses is being explored at present by the Garda authorities.
