Vol. 397 No. 7

Written Answers. - Shooting of Wildlife.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

60 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Finance the factual basis for his statement that there is no danger to our valuable wildlife as a result of the excessive shooting activities of out of State shooters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

61 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the way in which the impact of out of State hunting of all wild birds is monitored and reviewed on an ongoing basis by the Wildlife Service of the Office of Public Works; if he will give details of the impact of out of State hunting on snipe and woodcock stocks; if he will outline the number of snipe and woodcock shot for the 1989-90 season by out of State hunters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 60 and 61 together.

The inclusion of any game species in the open seasons list for hunting is reviewed annually having regard to the conservation requirements of each species. This review is concerned solely with the population level of the species and does not differentiate between native and out of State hunters.

There is no evidence that the populations of snipe and woodcock are being adversely effected by hunting. I do not have details of the number of snipe and woodcock shot in 1989-90 by out of State hunters.
