Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Leavers Without Educational Qualifications.

John Bruton

Ceist:

207 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she has made an estimate of the prospective cost to the economy of the present level of school-leaving by those without any educational qualification.

While the inter-departmental committee on the problems of early schools leavers referred to the 1986 Youth Employment Agency survey which showed that 88 per cent of the young long term unemployed had no school leaving certificate, and 51 per cent had no educational qualifications, no formal costings were undertaken of the effect of early school leaving on the economy.

Following the committee's report, the youthreach scheme providing two years' full-time vocational training for unqualified early school leavers was introduced jointly by the Departments of Education and Labour.
