Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - Storing of Chilled/Frozen Food.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

74 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Health, in view of the statement from the Environmental Health Officers' Association that up to 40 per cent of retail food outlets in the country are storing food above the recommended temperatures and that the risks of food poisoning are thus increased, if he has any plans to make regulations governing temperatures to be used in commercial fridges; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have asked the Food Safety Advisory Committee to carry out a general review of the food hygiene regulations and to make recommendations to me. One of the matters being considered by the committee as part of this review is whether the temperature at which frozen and chilled foods are stored in retail outlets should be specified in the regulations.

I look forward to the recommendations of the Food Safety Advisory Committee in the matter.
