Vol. 398 No. 5

Written Answers. - Flooding in County Mayo.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

49 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance the measures he proposes to take in order to alleviate the ongoing flooding throughout the winter and spring on lands (details supplied) in County Mayo.

The area in question which is situated in the Corrib-Mask-Robe catchment area drains into a Swallow Hole channel and has no overland drainage outfall. As such the area is liable to flooding. The scheduled works of the Corrib-Mask-Robe catchment drainage scheme were designed to provide improved drainage in the growing season while affording only very limited relief during winter. The possibility of connecting the area directly to the Robe River was investigated during scheme works but was rejected on economic grounds.

As scheme works have been completed for some years now, the Commissioners of Public Works have no plans to undertake any additional works in the area at this stage.
