Edward Nealon

Ceist:

173 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if she intends to sanction and fund a general purposes room in the extension to be constructed as the girls' national school, Ballymote, County Sligo, in advance of the proposed amalgamation with the boys' national school.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 172 and 173 together.

I have approved the provision of a permanent extension containing four classrooms at Ballymote Convent national school, County Sligo, to cater for the amalgamation with the boys' school. The accommodation brief has been discussed and agreed with the school's authorities.

It is my intention that the new accommodation will be available as soon as the remaining formalities have been completed. Tender documents have been completed for the project and the question of the invitation of tenders is being considered at present. A decision in this regard will be conveyed to the school authorities at the earliest possible date. I am not in a position at this stage to say precisely when tenders will be invited or when the building works will be completed.

In accordance with my policy of concentrating available resources on the provision of essential classroom accommodation it is not possible to grant aid the provision of a general purposes room in conjunction with the project.
