Written Answers. - Driving Test Applications.

Ceist:

126 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the number of applicants currently waiting for driving tests; the average waiting period for each driving test centre; and when additional testers will be appointed to help reduce the lists.

The total number of applicants currently awaiting driving tests is 59,000 approximately. As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 15 on 26 April I have made arrangements to expand the number of permanent testers from 48 to 67 to deal with current applications and I am also considering further arrangements to increase the number of tests in order to clear the backlog. These arrangements will be implemented as soon as possible.

The current waiting periods at each test centre are as follows:
