Ceist:151 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Health if he intends to update the law in relation to mental treatment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is my intention to put forward proposals for new mental health legislation but before doing so I intend to have widespread consultation with interested parties. My Department is currently preparing a discussion document which will examine all aspects of mental health legislation. This document will also make proposals for legislation which will facilitate the development of a psychiatric service which is predominantly community based.
